AI search optimization agency or software: which blocker are you solving
The debate is framed wrong. An agency and a tool solve different blockers, and the order you buy them in decides your bill.

"AI search optimization agency" grew about 484% quarter over quarter in US search, per Google Ads data pulled in September 2026, at roughly $49 a click. The hesitation behind that query is real, and the debate is almost always framed wrong.
The question is not agency versus software. It is which blocker is stopping you from being recommended. There are three, they have different remedies, and picking the wrong remedy costs you a year.
Blocker 1: you are not legible
AI crawlers are blocked, your product pages carry no usable attributes, your feed is incomplete, or your products have no barcodes. This is the most common case in the brands we audit, and by far the cheapest to fix.
Remedy: software. An agency will bill several thousand dollars for an audit that reaches the same conclusion, then bill you for the fix. The diagnosis is automatable, and so is most of the correction.
Blocker 2: you are legible but not persuasive
Your pages are clean, the engines see you, and they still recommend someone else. Usually that traces to one specific missing attribute: the competitor cited in your place documents a compatibility, a certification or a use case that you do not.
Remedy: software to identify the missing attribute query by query, then a person to produce the substance if it does not exist yet. This is the mixed case, and the most common one in brands that are already well organized.
Blocker 3: nobody talks about you
Your product facts exist only on your own site, no roundup in your category mentions you, no publication has covered you. The engines have nothing to corroborate, and they prefer a brand they can cite from three sources.
Remedy: an agency, a freelancer, or internal time. No software manufactures external authority, and a vendor promising it is lying to you. This is where retainer spend is fully justified.
The cheapest order of operations
- Measure first: with no baseline you will never know which blocker you have.
- Fix the mechanical layer: fast, cheap, and it gates everything else.
- Measure again: a share of brands find that was the whole problem, and stop there.
- Buy production only for what remains, now knowing the exact topics, which cuts the budget substantially.
- Keep measuring: that is what tells you whether the retainer is working, which no agency can prove on its own.
An honest agency will tell you the same thing. Several of the agencies with published pricing sell the audit as a separate line item precisely because the diagnosis determines everything after it.
