Best AEO agency in 2026? What the engagement includes, line by line

AEO is now a service line at most agencies. Here is what the engagement actually contains, item by item, and which items software already does.

"AEO agency" grew about 126% year over year in US search at roughly $50 a click, and "best aeo agency" around 200% quarter over quarter, per Google Ads data pulled in September 2026. Before paying for an AEO engagement, it helps to know what one actually contains.

Reading across agency pages on both sides of the Atlantic on 16 September 2026, the engagement is remarkably consistent. Six line items appear nearly everywhere.

The six line items

  • A technical audit: AI crawler access, markup, machine-readable files, page structure.
  • A semantic audit: the questions in your category, which you answer and which you leave to others.
  • Citation tracking across three or four engines, with a monthly report.
  • Answer-first content production, with the answer stated at the top of the page.
  • Link building or digital PR, so your facts exist somewhere other than your own site.
  • Ongoing advisory, with regular calls and adjustments.

Which ones software already does

Items one and three, entirely. An access and markup audit is a programmatic task, and citation tracking is precisely what a tool produces continuously for a fraction of the cost of a hand-written monthly report.

Item two is half automatable: a tool identifies which questions you are absent from and which attribute is missing, but deciding the strategic response stays human. Item four is mixed, generation helps but factual validation must be enforced. Items five and six are human, no argument.

What that does to your budget

Published US retainers make the arithmetic vivid. In RevenueZen's own grid, a quarterly AI visibility audit appears at the $10,000 monthly tier and a monthly one at $15,000. That is measurement cadence, priced as advisory, for work software performs daily at two orders of magnitude less.

That is not a scandal, it is agency cost structure. But it is a trade-off worth making deliberately rather than by default.

The combination that works

In most brands we see, the effective setup is software for measurement and catalog work, plus a tightened engagement focused on production and PR, scoped by what the measurement identified. The retainer shrinks and its effectiveness rises, because the agency works on chosen topics instead of assumed ones.

Ask one question on the call: what share of the monthly fee covers tracking and reporting, and is that share negotiable if I supply the measurement. A serious agency will have that conversation, because their time is better spent on items five and six.
